FAQS

Why Is It Called a Tennis Bracelet?

The term "tennis" was actually first applied to a bracelet in this style during a US Open match.  The American tennis player Chris Evert wore a delicate and flexible single-strand diamond bracelet. During play, it was thrown from her wrist. She famously stopped the competition and refused to restart play until the bracelet was located and found. After this widely publicized event, the term "tennis" was used to describe this jewelry style for both bracelets and necklaces.

When did this event take place? Although you'll find many sources that date it to 1987, in an article for The Adventurine, Marion Fasel pins down the actual year of this US Open match to 1978.

How to Buy a Diamond Tennis Bracelet

When shopping for your diamond tennis bracelet, there are a few things to take into consideration to ensure you make the right purchase. For example, is this going to be a special occasion-only bracelet? Would you rather be able to wear it to work or an impromptu night out with the girls as well? These will not only help you determine the best designs but also the type of prong setup or protection you should look for around the diamonds. The next, and often most important, aspect to consider is budget. If you have a smaller budget, it may be wise to consider a laboratory-grown tennis bracelet or one that is under 1CTW. If you do have a larger budget, think about how you want to spend most of your money; do you want to focus on the size of the stones or would you prefer a more intricate design?

Lastly, all of the bracelets mentioned below will have some sort of clasp as well as a second "safety" clasp. We move our hands so much and our wrist comes into contact with hard surfaces like tables, counters, keyboards, etc...quite frequently, you want to make sure that your tennis bracelet stays nice and secure.

Can You Wear a Diamond Tennis Bracelet Every Day?

A diamond tennis bracelet with a strong clasp and 4 prong setting is an ideal piece of jewelry for everyday wear. The right diamond tennis bracelets can add a touch of glamour to any outfit without the fear of losing such a prized possession. After all, these bracelets are built to withstand even the most intense of tennis matches.

If you are looking for a touch of bling to add to your everyday wardrobe, tennis bracelets can be a great way to do it. Most people think of tennis bracelets as only a "special occasion" piece, but that is far from the truth. If you do want to wear your bracelet every day to work or whatnot, there are a few bracelets that are going to be better for this type of wear.

Why is it called a Tennis Bracelet?

The name ‘tennis bracelet’ originates from the 1987 US Open when a professional tennis player, Chris Evert, lost her diamond bracelet during a match. Evert asked the officials to pause the game to look for her bracelet, all while spectators and TV viewers watched the search.

Chris Evert was not only a Tennis Superstar, but she was also known as a fashion icon as well. Dubbed “The Ice Maiden”, Evert’s most notable style choice was her diamond eternity bracelet.

Since that day, the line diamond bracelet has been referred to as the tennis bracelet. Jewelers instantly started to receive requests for a “tennis bracelet”. Decades after the 1987 US Open, viewers, tennis players and the general public alike have been inspired to wear diamond bracelets themselves.

What is a Tennis Bracelet?

A tennis bracelet is a bracelet that contains small diamonds or gems connected by a thin, precious metal chain. As a piece of elegant jewelry, tennis bracelets are usually made of 14K or 18K gold, platinum, or sterling silver.

Originally, tennis bracelets were known as “line diamond bracelets” – a name that’s still used on occasion today. Like many other pieces of jewelry, the tennis bracelet has since earned a name that’s more the result of a notable public event than its origins or function.

Where to Buy a Tennis Bracelet

Similar to when buying a diamond ring, you want to purchase your tennis bracelet from a reputable and reliable jewelry vendor. Based on our years of experience, we recommend the following vendors for tennis bracelets and other fine jewelry.

Can You Shower With a Tennis Bracelet?

Showering with your tennis bracelet on your wrist can result in soaps and other products leaving a film on the diamonds, reducing their brilliance and making them sparkle significantly less than normal. Because of this, it’s best to take your diamond bracelet off before showering.

How Loose Should a Tennis Bracelet Be?

A tennis bracelet should fit comfortably enough that it can move freely on your wrist without any discomfort. However, it shouldn’t be so loose that it could potentially slide off and go missing. To check the fit, make sure you can only fit one finger between the bracelet and your wrist.

Can You Shorten a Tennis Bracelet?

Just like other pieces of jewelry, tennis bracelets can be adjusted. If your tennis bracelet is too loose, a jeweler can remove one or several links and give it a tighter fit. This means there’s less of a need to get the perfect size for a tennis bracelet than for other jewelry.

Can You Wear a Tennis Bracelet Every Day?

Tennis bracelets are versatile, meaning you can wear them as everyday pieces of jewelry with a casual outfit or just for special nights out. Remember that Chris Evert, who originally made this type of bracelet famous, felt comfortable enough to wear it during a tennis tournament.
